She Doesn't Want Flowers This Year.

She wants Varenna — the quiet side of Lake Como where locals still outnumber tourists, where dinner reservations matter more than Instagram angles, and where ferry boats replace rental cars. This is the Mother's Day gift that lasts longer than a weekend brunch.

More Than Flowers is a small-group trip thoughtfully designed for couples who've earned the right to travel without checking in on the kids every hour. Days are structured but flexible. Dinners are intimate — sometimes the whole group, sometimes just a few couples at tucked-away trattorias we've reserved ahead.

You'll cook fresh pasta with a local chef. Ferry to Bellagio for the afternoon and understand why you're glad you're not staying there. Take the funicular up to Brunate for views that make you reconsider your entire life. And eat — really eat — at the kind of lakeside restaurants where the owner pours the wine and the menu changes with whatever arrived that morning.

Varenna over Bellagio. Authentic over touristy. Built-in couple time over forced group bonding. A slower pace than the Dolomites, warmer weather than Scotland, and more romantic than a whiskey tour — though we love those too.

Max group size: 12 people. No tour bus. No lanyard. No credential.

Seven Days. One Lake.Ferries, Not Rental Cars.

Varenna

The Quiet Side

Boutique Lakeside Hotel6 Nights

A small lakeside hotel in the heart of Varenna — steps from the ferry dock, the passeggiata, and the restaurants that make this village worth the trip.

Fly into Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP). We'll arrange your transfer north along the lake — approximately 90 minutes by car, or take the train to Varenna-Esino station (one of the most scenic rail rides in Lombardy). Watch the landscape shift from plains to foothills, and then the first glimpse of Lake Como appears like something from a painting.

Arrive in Varenna. Check into the hotel. Walk the passeggiata — Varenna's lakeside promenade, narrow and winding, with views across the water to Bellagio and the mountains beyond.

Evening: Welcome dinner with the full group. Local wine, lakeside setting, and the kind of meal that sets the tone for the entire week. You'll understand immediately why we chose Varenna over the flashier options.

Morning: Visit the local market. See what's in season — the ingredients you'll be cooking with in an hour.

Late morning: Cooking class with a local chef. Fresh pasta from scratch, seasonal sauces, the kind of technique you'll actually use when you get home. Lunch is what you just made — paired with local wines.

Afternoon: Free time. Explore Villa Monastero and its botanical gardens stretching along the lake. Or simply sit at a café on the water and do absolutely nothing. You're on vacation.

Evening: Small-group dinner at a restaurant we've chosen — 2–4 couples per table, intimate and unhurried.

Ferry south to Como town — the city at the bottom of the lake that gives it its name.

Morning: Ride the Brunate funicular — a 7-minute climb up the hillside to the village of Brunate, where the views of the lake, the Alps, and on clear days Milan itself will make you reconsider your entire life plan.

Midday: Back down to Como. Visit the Duomo di Como — a Gothic-Renaissance cathedral that took 400 years to build and looks like it was worth every one. Wander the old town.

Lunch overlooking the lake. The kind of lunch that turns into two hours because no one wants to leave the table.

Afternoon: Ferry back to Varenna.

Evening: Dinner on your own. We'll give you reservations and recommendations — you get the night to yourselves.

The most famous town on the lake is a 15-minute ferry ride away. Today you'll understand why we based you in Varenna instead.

Morning: Ferry to Bellagio. Walk the steep cobblestone streets. Browse the shops. Visit Villa Melzi and its lakeside gardens. See the “Pearl of Lake Como” that everyone talks about.

Lunch on your own in Bellagio — plenty of options along the waterfront and in the village lanes.

Afternoon: Ferry back to Varenna. The difference will be clear: Bellagio is beautiful but crowded. Varenna is beautiful and yours.

Evening: Small-group dinner — a restaurant with a terrace over the lake, the kind of place where the owner pulls up a chair and tells you what to order.

No schedule. No ferry to catch. This is the day you design.

Options we can arrange: A guided hike along the Sentiero del Viandante — an ancient lakeside trail with views that earn every step. A private tour of Villa Carlotta and its legendary gardens. A wine tasting at a local vineyard. Or simply stay in Varenna — swim, read, eat gelato, repeat.

This is the day that separates a great trip from a tour. You do exactly what you want.

Evening: Dinner on your own. By now you have your favorite spot. Go back.

Morning: Optional activities — one more villa, one more hike, one more espresso on the water. Or sleep in. You've earned it.

Afternoon: Free time in Varenna. Last chance to walk the passeggiata, pick up olive oil or limoncello to bring home, or just sit and memorize the view.

Evening: Farewell small-group dinner. The best restaurant of the week. The wine flows, the stories land, and you realize you just had the trip of a lifetime with people you'd actually want to see again.

Breakfast at the hotel. Pack. Take one last look at the lake.

Late morning: Private transfer to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) for your flight home.

OR stay for the Milan Extension (optional add-on): Transfer to Milan instead. Two nights in the city — the Duomo, the Last Supper, aperitivo in Navigli, and the kind of shopping that justifies the extra suitcase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fly into Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) — about 90 minutes from Varenna. We'll coordinate transfers based on your arrival time, or you can take the direct train to Varenna-Esino station (scenic and easy). Major airlines fly direct to Milan from most US hubs. We'll share flight recommendations and transfer details once you book.

Lake Como has an excellent public ferry system connecting all the lakeside towns. Your ferry passes are included for the entire week. Varenna is a major ferry stop with frequent service to Bellagio (15 minutes), Menaggio, Como town, and dozens of smaller villages. It's the most pleasant commute you'll ever have.

This trip is designed with built-in flexibility. Group activities happen mostly during the day — cooking class, day trips, excursions. Dinners alternate between small-group meals (2–4 couples per table, not the whole group) and evenings on your own. Free afternoons and the unscheduled day are entirely yours. You'll never feel like you're on a group tour.

May is one of the best months on Lake Como. Daytime temperatures range from 65–75°F (18–24°C). Gardens are in full bloom, the lake is swimmable by late May, and the summer crowds haven't arrived yet. Pack layers for cooler evenings and a light rain jacket. We'll send a detailed packing list.

Bellagio is the most famous town on the lake — and the most crowded. Como is a city, not a village. Varenna is the sweet spot: authentic, walkable, beautiful, and small enough that you feel like a local by day three. The ferry connects you to everywhere else in minutes, so you get the best of all worlds without the crowds at your doorstep.

It's designed for couples, but solo travelers are welcome. The vibe is intimate and romantic — think small dinners, lakeside walks, and flexible schedules — so it naturally appeals to people traveling as a pair. Solo supplement pricing is available on request.

Lake Como sits at the intersection of Lombardy and Alpine cuisine. Expect fresh lake fish (missoltini, lavarello), risotto, fresh pasta, polenta, local cheeses, and olive oil from the groves that line the lake. The cooking class will teach you techniques you'll actually use at home. Multiple meals are included; for free evenings, we provide curated restaurant recommendations.

You'll stay at a boutique lakeside hotel in central Varenna for all 6 nights. No packing and unpacking. No shuttles. Walk out the front door and you're on the lake. Breakfast included daily.

Arrive 2 days early and we'll show you Milan — the Duomo, the Last Supper (tickets secured in advance), aperitivo in Navigli, and a transfer to Varenna on Day 1. It's an additional $800 per person and a great way to ease into the trip.

$500 deposit is refundable up to 90 days before departure. Final payment due February 15, 2027. Detailed cancellation terms provided at booking. Travel insurance strongly recommended.

Max 12 people — typically 5–6 couples. Ages 35–65, people who'd rather eat at a trattoria the owner recommended than a restaurant with a line out the door. If you're reading this page, you're the target audience.
